In my Yoga Therapy practice I work with different modals to help me get to the root of what my client needs. The main one I work with is the Koshas. Kosha is the Sanskrit word for a sheath or layer. If we take a holistic approach to our being, we will see that there are levels deeper than our physical bodies going from the gross to the very subtle...
The physical body and all its associated parts, it functioning and its connection with the physical space around it and what it experiences.
This is also referred to as the ‘Pranic Body’. This is the energy field which is the life force behind everything that exists.
The mind, emotions and intellect, how we have been affected by past experience, how we view the future .
Our personality, our drives, inclinations, motives and basic beliefs. This will all be affected by the conditioning we have absorbed from society, culture and family. What we are identified with? How we can transform to let go of unhealthy identifications in order to experience truth?
(or deepest passion and means of joy). The heart, how we relate to ourselves and the world around us, our relationships - do they bring joy? Are we able to experience joy in this life? Do we regularly give ourselves the gift of doing the things we enjoy or that bring passion and creativity into our lives?
Using this model helps me to see you as a whole and create a plan that is most suitable to you. From what I see in the Koshas, we will choose the appropriate asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing practices), meditations, intentions, visualisations and aims that will get you on the path to healing.
Healing at one level creates a ripple effect, creating healing at the other levels. If we work with the physical tension in the body, this can raise energy levels and also help to ease mental suffering.
